Summary

Four masters of urban fantasy and paranormal romance plunge readers into the dangerous, captivating world unearthed beyond the dark 。 。 。

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh delivers a smouldering story with Secrets at Midnight, as the scent of Bastien Smith’s elusive lover ignites a possessiveness in him that’s as feral as it is ecstatic。 And now that he’s found his mate, he’ll do anything to keep her。

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews’ novella, Magic Steals, when people start going missing, shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau and jaguar shifter Jim Shrapshire must uncover the truth about the mysterious creatures responsible。

From Milla Vane—a warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people。 But she quickly discovers that the beast isn't a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself。

It’s seer Makenna Frazier's first day on the job at Supernatural Protection and Investigations, and her first assignment is more than she bargained for when bodyguard duty for a leprechaun prince’s bachelor party goes every which way but right in national bestselling author Lisa Shearin’s Lucky Charms。

This is the book that brought me to this author。 A friend loaned it to me and I laughed so hard I had to check out the spi files。 This is a series I regularly check for updates on, buy the new book as soon as it’s out, and pout until I get another。

Night Shift by Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin, and Milla Vane – So this anthology has four novellas that have roots in a series。 But even if you are new to all four writers, you will still enjoy the stories。 It will probably hook you into reading the rest of the series though because it added to my person TBR pile!Secrets at Midnight - Nalini Singh – Bastian falls hard and fast for a lady who has secrets, some even from herself! Mixed bag, naturally, given the various authors。 I was in it for the Ilona Andrew’s tale (outstanding), and I very much enjoyed Shearin’s contribution (Lucky Charms - I may have to find more of her writing), but the other two weren’t really my jam。

When I started reading this anthology, I thought it was a guarantee that I would like Nalini Singh's and Ilona Andrews' stories。 Nalini Singh's writing is usually very solid。 Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels stories are generally pretty good, and I really like both Dali and Jim。 I had some doubts about Milla Vane, a。k。a。 Meljean Brook, because her heroines are sometimes dull or annoying, and the idea of barbarians is a bit repulsive to me。 I know nothing about Lisa Shearin, so it was a gamble。 It tur When I started reading this anthology, I thought it was a guarantee that I would like Nalini Singh's and Ilona Andrews' stories。 Nalini Singh's writing is usually very solid。 Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels stories are generally pretty good, and I really like both Dali and Jim。 I had some doubts about Milla Vane, a。k。a。 Meljean Brook, because her heroines are sometimes dull or annoying, and the idea of barbarians is a bit repulsive to me。 I know nothing about Lisa Shearin, so it was a gamble。 It turned out that Nalini Singh's story is the worst of the bunch, much worse than the others。 Secrets at Midnight - Nalini Singh - 1。5/5Bastien Smith and KirbyBastien finally meets his mate, Kirby, and helps her discover what she really is。This novella is very disappointing。 It's more a fanfiction than a story written by a bestselling author。 There is no tension, no real issue, neither Bastien nor Kirby has any problem being with each other。 Bastien keeps thinking how amazing Kirby is, but there is nothing in the story that supports it。 She is fearful, whiney, clingy, and possessive。 Magic Steals - Ilona Andrews - 4。5/5Dali Harimau and Jim ShrapsireAn Indonesian grandmother is missing and Dali, with the help from Jim, has to find who is responsible。Dali is insecure about her looks and her lack of toughness。 Lucky for her, Jim knows how to deal with them both。 I love these two。 They work well together。 Her cultural background, with her family and friends wanting to know all about her love life, gives more spice to the story。 The only problem is how her family does not notice Jim's scent or the steak's smell, or the noise as he is taking a shower。Lucky Charms - Lisa Shearin - 4。5/5Makenna Frazier and Ian Byrne (sort of)On her very first assignment in her new job, seer Makenna has to find five leprechauns who have escaped their bodyguards。 She herself is babysat by Ian Byrne, the highest achiever of all the agents。The Beast of Blackmoor - Milla Vane - 4。5/5Kavik and MalaMala has a quest to tame the Beast of Blackmoor。 The Beast of Blackmoor, Kavik, does not want to be tamed again。 Considering what happened last time, who does?I do understand both Kavik's and Mala's points of view。 It's too bad the god (or goddess?) is so cruel。 。。。more

I liked this book。 People who are interested in national disasters and US history as well as immigration will most probably be interested in reading this book。Readers can gain knowledge of what it was like to work in New York City in the early 1900s。 One of the things that was especially interesting was that there were no safety laws at work。 Also, there was a big contrast between the rich and the poor。 Some people may not like this book because it is very depressing, but it is an important even I liked this book。 People who are interested in national disasters and US history as well as immigration will most probably be interested in reading this book。Readers can gain knowledge of what it was like to work in New York City in the early 1900s。 One of the things that was especially interesting was that there were no safety laws at work。 Also, there was a big contrast between the rich and the poor。 Some people may not like this book because it is very depressing, but it is an important event in history to remember。This book was very well written。 It has black and white photos along with descriptions of the photos。 These photos give us a better idea of what people's lives were like。 。。。more

This was a confusing one for me。 I grabbed this one because it had Kate Daniels #6。5 story of Jim and Dani, and I thought it would be cute。 All four stories did not fit together well。First story by Nalini Singh I thought was cute。 Despite having not read any of her work before, and having this apparently #12。5 in the series, the story was a pretty good standalone。 I understood the basics of the changelings and what was happening to the characters。 The romance was cute with the main characters an This was a confusing one for me。 I grabbed this one because it had Kate Daniels #6。5 story of Jim and Dani, and I thought it would be cute。 All four stories did not fit together well。First story by Nalini Singh I thought was cute。 Despite having not read any of her work before, and having this apparently #12。5 in the series, the story was a pretty good standalone。 I understood the basics of the changelings and what was happening to the characters。 The romance was cute with the main characters and I felt their connection。Second story was the Kate Daniels one, and it was just ok for me。 Dali was as quirky as she was in the main stories, but I was hoping to see a little more emotion in Jim in this one, but he was just meh。 Ok side-story installment。The third story was just painful。 I didn't understand the whole world (apparently EVERY paranormal and fantastical creatures could be found and played some sort of role in this world) and it was definitely not a standalone because I didn't understand a bunch of it。 Also, there was NO romance in it at all。 There was the hint of it, so I'm guessing the two main characters get together in the first book of this series? I'll never know because I won't be reading further。The fourth story was my favorite, much more fantasy than paranormal and really good storybuilding。 However, the amount of erotic romance in it was really surprising since the other three stories had none。 This story felt longer and more involved and complete from start to finish。 There were some weird scenes like at the inn, but otherwise I really enjoyed it。All in all, this was just ok for me。 。。。more

Great supernatural stories by talented clever writers。 Sly and humerus, spooky and romantic。

Read this one mostly for the Kate Daniels/Dali & Jim story, which was cute and gave a better idea of Dali's abilities。 I find the Psy-Changling stories I have read kind of flat。 The SPI files story was kind of interesting, but I didn't love the slut-shaming main character。 The Barbarian story was predictably bonkers and therefore a lot of fun。 Read this one mostly for the Kate Daniels/Dali & Jim story, which was cute and gave a better idea of Dali's abilities。 I find the Psy-Changling stories I have read kind of flat。 The SPI files story was kind of interesting, but I didn't love the slut-shaming main character。 The Barbarian story was predictably bonkers and therefore a lot of fun。 。。。more

I picked this book up for just one of the four stories it contains, Lucky Charms, because everyone says in the review of the series that it is 。5 for that it is so awesome and outrageously funny as compared to the series。 I love the series and thought more outrageous and funny would be a good thing。 This one bordered on smutty and campy as opposed to the series which even though it is urban fantasy is more like a cozy mystery wrapped in the accoutrements of an urban fantasy。 Since cozy mystery s I picked this book up for just one of the four stories it contains, Lucky Charms, because everyone says in the review of the series that it is 。5 for that it is so awesome and outrageously funny as compared to the series。 I love the series and thought more outrageous and funny would be a good thing。 This one bordered on smutty and campy as opposed to the series which even though it is urban fantasy is more like a cozy mystery wrapped in the accoutrements of an urban fantasy。 Since cozy mystery series are my favorite, this series has quickly become addictive, hence reading a short story when I usually am not the slightest bit interested in short stories because there aren’t enough pages to become entangled in the story line and the characters lives。 I agree that the short story felt different and not in a good way for me。 I do。 Ot like smutty nor do I appreciate borderline smutty, a little romance that is understated is my preference。 I would not have read the series if I had read the short story first。 And in full disclosure, i did not read any of the other short stories in the book。 。。。more

This review is only for SPI files, the others are reviewed separately。I have read books 1 and 2, and I must say I wish they were more like this。 This was funny。 I kept reading lines out to kid 1 as I was reading at the dinner table。I don’t remember the sexy goblin dude… *frowns at self* [just saying sexy goblin feels… odd]This sets up some story points that I didn’t get in book 1。 [I didn’t know this story existed, okay?]4 stars

Secrets at Midnight - 4 starsAnother great novella in the Psy-Changeling series。 I felt bad for all that Kirby endured and glad that she’s now a part of a family again, on top of knowing her true identity。Character notes: Bastien is a DarkRiver leopard。 Kirby is 24 and a Canadian lynx。CW: stomach pains, foster care, heroine’s parents died in a house fire when she was 1 year old and she escaped, heroine was chosen for adoption and then returned to foster care, pregnant side character, ableist lan Secrets at Midnight - 4 starsAnother great novella in the Psy-Changeling series。 I felt bad for all that Kirby endured and glad that she’s now a part of a family again, on top of knowing her true identity。Character notes: Bastien is a DarkRiver leopard。 Kirby is 24 and a Canadian lynx。CW: stomach pains, foster care, heroine’s parents died in a house fire when she was 1 year old and she escaped, heroine was chosen for adoption and then returned to foster care, pregnant side character, ableist language, language about being “enslaved” by loveMagic Steals - 3 starsI haven’t read this series yet so some of the world-building confused me but this was still an enjoyable read, even though Dali and Jim were dealing with everyone’s literal worst nightmares。Character notes: Dali is 27 and Indonesian American; she’s vegetarian and wears glasses。 I’m inferring that Jim is African American: he’s described as having dark skin and at the end of the story they meet his mom who is described as being an African American woman。 Dali is a tiger shifter and Jim is a jaguar shifter。CW: missing person case, heroine refers to herself as blind and half blind, past racism and Orientalism, sexism, brief references to rape and to an aborted fetus being used in black magic, ableist languageThe Beast of Blackmoor - 4。5 starsThis is the whole reason I read this anthology! I loved A Heart of Blood and Ashes and wanted to read the prequel novella。 I’m not entirely sure how these two connect because I don’t recall encountering Kavik or Mala in AHOBAA but that does make me ever more intrigued by the world Vane is creating and what it’s all building toward。In any case, I’m glad I read AHOBAA first because this was even more intense, with more violence and rape, including the past enslavement and rape of the hero。 None of it is gratuitous but exercise caution if that’s a trigger for you。Mala is on a quest for Vela and it leads her to Kavik, who knows Mala’s arrival spells the end for him。 They had such great tension and chemistry and I had no idea how it was going to work but the evolution was extremely satisfying。 And hot。 There’s some really interesting exploration of what it means to tame someone or something and what it means to be free。 I was confused about how exactly Mala forsook Vela and strayed from her quest because I didn’t take her actions as such but otherwise, this was a very compelling read。Also shout out to Shim, the horse sired by the god Hanan who allows Mala to ride him but is certainly not tame。Character notes: Kavik is 20 but since this is barbarian times, that’s the equivalent of at least a man in his 30s。 Mala has brown skin。CW: revenants (zombie animals), hero was enslaved and raped as a child/teen, enslaved people, sex slavery, on-page rape by guard of prisoner, scars on face and body 。。。more

Somewhat pornographic。 Some stories were interesting but generally this book was about sex, sex, and more sex。 The final story was sheer porn mixed with violence。 The people just ran around having sex and talking about it。 I can’t count how many blowjobs the heroine gave out。 Then they save the world and have sex。 The end。
